Ann Rutledge: You know how many deaths God's directly responsible for in the Bible? The plagues, the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah. Millions. Do you know how many my Power is responsible for? Ten, and most of those ordered by your God. You serve a cruel lord who seeks only ignorance and His own glory.

Sister Greta: Satan is the one who brings death and ignorance and darkness. He turns away from the light! The love! Repent. God's Son redeems us.
Ann Rutledge: And mine will bring about a new way and destroy the old.
Sister Greta: No, you can stop it. Save the world. Untold grief, millions of lives. You can save yourself... The darkness will always give way to the light.
Ann Rutledge: Lucifer is the bringer of light. Satan is God! Long may He reign.

Character Information

Satan is a central figure in the mythos of the Damien series. Once one of God's most glorious and mighty archangels, Satan - known then as Lucifer, the Star of Morning and the Bringer of Light - turned his back on his creator; choosing instead to corrupt humanity out of jealousy.

Within the context of the series, Satan is the father of the titular character, Damien Thorn. As such, and although he does not make a physical appearance in the show, his presence and influence are felt in all aspects of his son's life both in the mundane and supernatural realms.

Appearance and Personality[]

You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, 'till iniquity was found in you.
— Ezekiel 28:15

Damien is believed to be Satan' son

Before his fall from grace, Lucifer was described as the perfect angel. He was beloved above all others and held counsel with God himself. However, this privilege made him conceited and entitled; driving him to madness with envy when God named mankind as His masterpiece.

After his descent into Hell, Lucifer all but abandoned his previous identity as the Angel of Light and the Morning Star - devoting himself to tormenting and controlling humanity through seduction and subtle deceit, all as his way of spiting his creator for choosing them over him.

History[]

How you are fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, Son of the Morning. How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations.
— Isaiah 14:12

As punishment for his actions, Lucifer was deported from God's presence and sentenced to spend eternity beneath the darkness of death; governing over the souls of those whose tainted free will had driven them to turn their backs on God as well. Over time, this pit was named Hell.

Even imprisoned as such, Satan's immense power and dominion over lies enabled him to influence the living world in many subtle ways. This enabled him to build a loyal following - called Satanists - among both the wealthy and the impoverished, all worshiping him as their true God.

Quotes[]

Professor Reneus: "He may not be fire and brimstone, Mr. Thorn, but the Devil does exist. He lurks in the dark corners of the heart." [1]
Professor Reneus: "The Devil has many names." [1]

Trivia[]

Contrary to popular belief and, partially, to the mythos of the series, Lucifer ("light-bringer" in Latin) isn't the name this being had in Heaven before his fall. The Latin word was also applied to others, including Jesus and several pre-Christian gods and heroes who shared a common story. The Hebrew words for "shining one, son of the morning" in Isaiah 14:12 are part of a prophetic vision against an oppressive king of Babylon, not a fallen angel. Satan and Devil, meaning "adversary" and "slanderer", respectively, can describe beings sharing common traits.
